  • The nature of 24 Hour Fitness’s operations posed several challenges. Most locations are open 24/7, resulting in high electricity usage and accelerated fixture wear. Many clubs relied on outdated lighting systems that led to inconsistent light quality, frequent outages, and costly maintenance issues, all of which disrupted operations and negatively impacted the member experience. The company also aimed to refresh and standardize the look and feel of its clubs across the nation. Lighting quality played a critical role in conveying brand consistency and creating a welcoming, energizing environment that supports member motivation and safety.

  • AWL developed a multi-year, multi-phase retrofit program tailored to the unique operational and design needs of 24 Hour Fitness. Projects were prioritized using a data-driven approach that factored in utility rates, rebate availability, and locations experiencing persistent maintenance challenges. In some years, over 50 clubs were upgraded, while in other years, the focus was on smaller waves based on program cycles. Each club received a customized LED lighting package designed to reduce energy usage by 40-50% per facility, while delivering improved visibility and longer-lasting performance. In many cases, these lighting upgrades were also integrated into broader remodel initiatives that included new paint, flooring, and signage, creating an overall uplift in ambiance and branding. AWL managed the entire delivery process, including site audits, product specification, rebate capture, procurement, logistics, and installation. All work was carefully coordinated to minimize disruptions to club operations and the least impact on staff and members.

  • The impact of this ongoing partnership has been significant. With average savings of 40 to 50 percent per site, 24 Hour Fitness has realized more than $5 million in annual energy savings across its portfolio. Over $2 million in utility rebates have helped offset project costs and boost ROI. Feedback from both staff and members has been consistently positive. The upgraded lighting has improved visibility, reduced maintenance needs, and created a cleaner, brighter, and more
welcoming atmosphere in every location. By standardizing lighting across markets, AWL has helped strengthen brand presentation while supporting 24 Hour Fitness’s broader energy and experience goals.
