City of Pleasanton Library

The Pleasanton Library faced several pressing issues due to outdated lighting systems installed in 1988. Over 500 fluorescent light fixtures had deteriorated, leaving many completely inoperable. The lighting control system, installed in 2011, was non-functional, forcing staff to manage lighting via circuit breakers, often leaving lights on overnight. Poor lighting conditions created usability challenges, particularly in evening hours and darker winter months, hindering library staff and patrons alike. Additionally, the City sought to align the project with its broader environmental and energy-saving goals under the ONE Pleasanton Strategic Plan and Climate Action Plan (CAP 2.0). Completing the project in an operational public library added complexity, requiring work to accommodate ongoing events and patron activity.
American Wholesale Lighting (AWL) implemented a comprehensive lighting retrofit, replacing the outdated fluorescent fixtures with advanced LED technology, delivering significantly brighter, more energy-efficient lighting.
Key features included:
Installation of an advanced lighting control system featuring daylight harvesting, dimming, and occupancy sensors to optimize energy usage.
Seamless project execution using AWL’s proprietary project management platform to coordinate efforts and minimize disruptions.
Collaboration with Wattstopper, a leading manufacturer, to tailor the control system to the library’s unique needs.
Strategically scheduled work to maintain library operations and public accessibility during the upgrade.
Enhanced Environment: Brighter and more uniform lighting has transformed the library into a
welcoming space, improving visibility for staff and patrons.Energy Efficiency: The new system delivers a 54% reduction in energy consumption,
significantly lowering utility costs while supporting the City’s environmental goals.Improved Control: Staff now benefit from an intuitive lighting control system that ensures ease
of use and operational efficiency.
Energy Savings: Reduced lighting-related energy costs by 54%, translating to long-term financial and environmental benefits.
Project Success: Completed on time and within budget despite the challenges of working in a fully operational library.
Client Satisfaction: City officials praised the transformation, emphasizing the project’s alignment withenvironmental stewardship and community needs.

The City of Pleasanton Library Lighting Improvement Project aimed to replace outdated and deteriorating fluorescent lighting systems installed in 1988 with modern, energy-efficient LED fixtures. The project involved retrofitting approximately 500 light fixtures and implementing an advanced lighting control system featuring daylight harvesting, dimming, and occupancy sensors. Despite the challenges of working in an active public space, the $1.2 million project was completed on time and within budget, delivering a 54% reduction in energy costs, enhanced lighting quality, and improved operational efficiency. The project aligns with the City’s environmental goals under its Climate Action Plan (CAP 2.0) and ONE Pleasanton Strategic Plan.
