Project
SSA MARINE

SSA Marine, a leading terminal operator in the United States, partnered with American Wholesale Lighting (AWL) to upgrade its aging high-mast lighting infrastructure at the Port of Oakland. The project involved replacing 1,394 1,000W metal halide fixtures with high-efficiency LED systems across multiple berths, all while maintaining daily operations at this critical, 24/7 shipping terminal.
SSA Marine approached AWL with a clear objective: reduce energy consumption, eliminate ongoing maintenance issues, and significantly improve visibility and safety for around-the-clock port activities. The scale of the project, the nature of the environment, and the need for uninterrupted operations made execution especially complex.
AWL engineered a high-efficiency lighting solution that matched or exceeded existing light levels while drastically reducing power usage. Each fixture was equipped with Itron wireless controls and covered under a 10-year manufacturer warranty, ensuring long-term durability and system monitoring.
The design leveraged standardized, high-performance LED units to streamline installation and enhance efficiency. Fixtures were integrated into an innovative control network, allowing SSA Marine to monitor lighting performance in real-time and further reduce future maintenance requirements.
The project’s success hinged on tight coordination and flexibility. AWL deployed a dedicated team of certified electricians and worked in close collaboration with SSA Marine’s facilities team to develop phased work zones. Installation was scheduled around live cargo movements and adjusted in real time to account for vessel activity and operational needs.
Daily communication with the on-site point of contact guaranteed ongoing alignment, and AWL strictly followed all access and safety protocols. This high level of coordination helped keep the project on schedule and fully compliant from start to finish.
This project demonstrates AWL’s ability to deliver complex, large-scale energy retrofits in operationally sensitive environments. By completing the work without disruption and ahead of schedule, AWL helped SSA Marine achieve significant savings, improve terminal safety, and modernize its inf rastructure for long-term performance.
The success of this project showcases AWL’s strengths in execution, safety compliance, and delivering measurable ROI through smart lighting solutions.
The retrofit delivered measurable results on multiple fronts:
Energy usage was reduced by over 60%, saving 4.43 million kWh annually.
$804,576 in annual cost savings from reduced energy and maintenance.
Monthly savings of $67,048 across the site.
A $280,000 utility rebate helped offset capital costs.
Modern, low-maintenance lighting, and supported by a 10-year warranty.
SSA Marine reported high satisfaction with both the outcome and AWL’s professionalism throughout the process.
